Google reviewTypes of Braces
Orthodontic appliances, known as braces, are devices used in the treatment of malocclusions and for aligning and straightening permanent teeth. Orthodontic braces work by exerting continuous pressure on the teeth to correct their position. Braces can be divided into removable and fixed types.
Orthodontics: What is it and why is orthodontic treatment so important?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on treating malocclusions and jaw-facial anomalies, as well as correcting dental irregularities. Properly conducted orthodontic treatment prevents the development of serious health problems. It improves the quality of life for patients, restores their beautiful smile, and positively affects their psychophysical well-being (eliminating complexes, increasing self-esteem). Such treatment can be carried out regardless of the patient’s age (early school orthodontics, fitting dental prostheses for senior patients).

Removable Braces
Removable braces can be taken out by the patient and are not permanently attached to the teeth. Depending on the type of malocclusion, design, or mode of action, removable braces can be further divided into passive, mechanically active, and functionally mechanically active braces.
Removable braces:
are economical (low cost of production);
do not damage teeth due to intermittent use;
can be quickly repaired.
The effectiveness of treatment, of course, depends on the self-discipline of the wearer. Longer usage translates to better therapeutic outcomes.

Fixed braces
These are orthodontic devices that consist of bands and brackets. Each brace has an arch wire that connects each of the structural elements. Bands are placed on the molars, while brackets are attached to the enamel of the remaining teeth. The construction is completed with sliding hooks, springs, or ligatures (additional elements).
Fixed orthodontic braces are divided into:
- Traditional metal braces, which are the basic type of fixed braces.
- Aesthetic braces (sapphire and crystal, which are colorless and thus transparent, as well as porcelain and ceramic with a milky white colour), which provide better cosmetic results.
- Self-ligating braces, which do not have rubber ligatures (bands) for securing the arch wire in the brackets (these require fewer control visits to replace rubber components).
There is also a type of orthodontic appliance that does not fit into the basic categories of removable and fixed braces. These are called orthodontic aligners, often referred to as cosmetic aligners.
Aligners: What is this type of orthodontic appliance?
Treatment with aligners is an aesthetic orthodontic solution. This therapy involves the use of invisible aligners that do not require metal components like fixed braces. Orthodontic treatment with aligners is among the most discreet options available. The aligners can be put on and taken off at any time, giving both the patient and the orthodontist full control over the treatment process.
They are particularly recommended for those who do not want their treatment to be visible to others. This type of orthodontic appliance is also one of the most comfortable, easy to use, and easy to clean, ensuring perfect oral hygiene.

Preparation of Braces and the Patient for Fitting
The first visit to the orthodontist Poland involves assessing the type of malocclusion based on a painless and non-invasive examination. The orthodontist in Gdansk must analyse facial symmetry and jaw width, as well as check the function of the jaw joints. The doctor also examines the condition of the teeth and gums, the state of the frenula, tongue, and salivary glands. However, before orthodontic treatment begins, all teeth should be treated for cavities and be in good condition.
The next step is diagnosing the malocclusion problem, which is done by creating a plaster model of the bite, a panoramic X-ray (pantomogram), and cephalometric analysis. The information obtained from these procedures allows the orthodontist to develop a treatment plan, which is then discussed with the patient during the next visit. During this visit, the orthodontist, in consultation with the patient, determines which orthodontic appliance would be the best choice.
Fitting Braces
The final stage is placing the braces on the teeth. This process is preceded by the separation of the teeth, which lasts from five to seven days. This allows for the placement of the band on the teeth. Once the separation is complete, the orthodontist at the next visit cleans the patient’s teeth to attach the brackets using special glue and a curing light. The orthodontist then inserts the arch wire into the slots of the brackets, which is the source of force acting on the teeth, enabling the shaping of their position in the mouth. Finally, the doctor places rubber ligatures (if the type of brace requires them).

Cost of Fitting Braces
- The price of fitting fixed braces depends on several factors:
- The type of malocclusion;
- The degree of its severity;
- The level of complexity;
The type of orthodontic appliance chosen to correct the malocclusion.
Our clinic collaborates with the world-renowned orthodontic authority Prof. Fudalej from Smileline. Each case is consulted with a large international group of experts. We offer treatment with both fixed and removable braces.
The cost for a consultation service is 450 PLN, which includes taking photographic images of the face and intraoral photos, as well as intraoral scans. This serves to create digital models and perform a panoramic X-ray. A referral is provided for a specialized cephalometric X-ray (a lateral skull X-ray) at a trusted laboratory.
The cost of fitting a single arch of fixed braces ranges from 2000 to 5000 PLN, while the cost of removable braces is between 500 and 1200 PLN.
